Didactic lectures by faculty, reading of primary literature/class discussions led by students will examine non-verbal communication and mind-brain-body relationships. Topics to be covered include reading faces and bodies, microexpressions, emotion and emotional contagion. Assessment will be based on seminar presentation/led discussions, participation in class, and written critiques on selected readings.
Putative Student Learning Objectives:
1. Have a basic understanding of some of the main assessment methods for relating behavior and brain activity.
2 Have a basic knowledge of brain anatomy, including being able to identify brain regions and networks making up the ‘social brain’ and explicate their function.
3 Understand basic social neuroscience topics, including emotion and motivation, reading faces and bodies, empathy, and altruism, and be able to:
3.1 read, interpret and present a piece of primary scientific literature to the class;
3.2 lead a class discussion on a selected social neuroscience topic;
3.3 critically evaluate the validity of primary scientific lierature & popular media dealing with social neuroscience topics.
